WICHITA COUNTY, TX (KAUZ) - The Wichita County Sheriff's Posse is doing what they can to help one of their own in need.
A lunch benefit was held Thursday to raise money for a teenager with cancer.
Jessica Allen is a 19-year-old that the sheriff's deputies have known for a long time.
Her mother, Laura Allen, works in the Wichita County Clerk's office and both participated in the Wichita County Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy.
Deputy Melvin Joyner said when they heard what had happened, they wanted to help.
"Just about a year ago we found out she was battling cancer," he said. "So we wanted to try and help her."
The donations collected at Thursday's lunch will go towards helping the Allen family with Jessica's medical costs.
"Anytime we can pitch in and try and help somebody raise some money, especially if they're fighting medical issues, we just help them offset those costs because we know how great those can build up to," Deputy Joyner added.
He said this is what the Sheriff's Posse does, take care of each other and those in need.
Other sheriff's deputies Newschannel 6 talked to said it is great to go out and help those in the community because that's who they work for.
Deputy Joyner added that the community has always supported them, so they want to return the favor.
The Wichita County Sheriff's Posse regularly puts on fundraisers to help people in need.
They said they will continue to be there for the Allen family throughout Jessica's battle.
