WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - A proposed transportation center has been given the green light to be built next to the main gate of Sheppard Air Force Base.
On Tuesday, city councilors approved $887,000 worth of funding for the facility that will be for city buses, taxi's, rideshare companies, parking for guests, and possibly Greyhound buses.
Chief of SAFB Public Affairs, George Woodward, said it will greatly benefit the airmen.
"They come from basic military training," Woodward said. "They don't have their own transportation. They don't have their own vehicles here. So when they go out and about in the community, they take the city bus, taxi or other public transportation. So this facility will give them a safer, more convenient place to access those facilities and services."
Woodward said it will also be great for veterans and retirees coming to the base for medical treatment.
He said he's excited to see the new area complete with the transportation center, and the future main gate improvements.
They will include airmen and aircraft statues as well as better access to the gate. For more on this story, click here.
