WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - The dinner rush at restaurants all over Texoma leads to the water taps being turned on and off but for some Wichita Falls restaurants, the water keeps running even after hours.
The new My H2O Portal in Wichita Falls allows the restaurant owners to monitor their water usage. They can monitor water usage from 24-hours ago to months ago.
Ford Swanson, the owner of McBride's Steakhouse, said he found out how to save water and money using the portal.
"I turned off my ice maker to see if it was running water and I've come to find out, overnight, my ice maker is dumping about 147-units a month worth of water," Swanson said. "Which is about $847."
That is also almost $10,000 a year. After he turned the ice maker, water usage after hours stopped.
Swanson has owned the restaurant since 2015. He said he is following in the footsteps of his grandfather.
"[I started earning] a paycheck around 15 to 16 years old in our meat market bussing tables, waiting tables, washing dishes," Swanson said. "I was just learning every aspect of the business."
He said before using the My H2O Portal he did not know how much money he was spending.
"Water bills have been pretty consistent so you didn't know," Swanson said. "You didn't know what to look for."
Swanson said he is looking at buying a new ice maker that will not run all night and may save him thousands of dollars a year.
