WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - In less than 48 hours Spec's Liquor will open their doors in Wichita Falls, thanks in large part to the Buxton Company.
Buxton Company is a group that is helping the city bring in new retailers. On Tuesday, Wichita Falls City Council agreed to use Buxton for the second year.
They will pay the group $50,000 to help Wichita Falls match up with other businesses that are interested in coming to the area. It's all in an effort to provide more options for the citizens.
"My wife and I have been here three months," Spec's Store Manager, Russell Cannon said. "A lot of friends have embraced us. We've met a lot of new friends. Everyone in town has just been wonderful."
Cannon will help run the new Spec's location. Wichita Falls Mayor, Stephen Santellana, is happy to have them.
"Anytime a business comes and there's excitement generated, you've got to be excited yourself about it," he said. "A lot of people are looking forward to having it."
And he said Buxton Company is who to thank. The agency did not just help bring in Spec's, but also Panda Express. The city was so impressed, they are paying the group to keep working with them.
"In the past, we were just waiting for somebody to come to Wichita Falls with some interest in opening up," Mayor Santellana said. "If you have a service like this, they can kind of tell you who's out there and who's willing to come to Wichita Falls."
In a statement to Newschannel 6, Buxton said they are delighted to be back, adding they worked with Wichita Falls to lay the groundwork for effective retail recruitment and retention efforts.
They will continue to provide the city with market research needed to grow the economy. Cannon said they came to Wichita Falls for many different reasons.
"It's got an economy that is steady," he said. "It doesn't grow and doesn't shrink. We've got a couple stores a little bit further from here. We are just getting out of the metroplex and expanding."
Mayor Santellana said their goal is to give people options.
"It's giving the citizens a better quality of life, he said. "Whether it's better restaurants or different types of retail."
Mayor Santellana believes it is important to have a good mixture of local and corporate businesses. He said Buxton gives them the best chance to do that.
The Spec's liquor store will take over the old Office Depot building, something Mayor Santellana is excited about.
He said empty buildings are an eyesore for the city and he hopes to fill even more.
