VERNON, TX (KAUZ) - We begin our look at Class 1A, Division II with a look at the Northside Indians!

Under the leadership of a new head coach, they're looking to bounce back after a two-win season a year ago.

"Kids are working their tails off, there's not much more you can ask for right now," says first-year coach Jeremy Reeder. His Indians return five starters on each side of the ball, and overall, their numbers are healthier than they've been in several seasons.

"From talking to parents and other coaches, they say the numbers are great right now," Reeder said. "So that's a positive thing for the future right now, for us."

Reeder comes to Northside from Oklahoma, where he coached 11-man from the smallest Class A schools all the way up to some of the biggest 6A programs. This is his first time coaching 6-man, but he's looking forward to the challenge of something that runs in his family.

"My dad was a coach," he said. "My brother is a coach. Football is football. You've still got to tackle, you've still got to be able to run, you've still got to be able to throw."

He says he's looking to bring a fun atmosphere to the Indians' sidelines this season.

"I'm a real positive guy," Reeder said. "I don't like to hoot and holler on the sidelines. I'm not a big 'get in your face' kind of guy. Now, if I need to, don't get me wrong, there comes a time when everybody needs to. But I'm a real positive guy."

The biggest adjustment, he says, will be taking advantage of the high-scoring nature of the 6-man game. The Indians averaged just over 15 points per game last year, he wants a high-scoring team.

"You've got to figure out ways to score," he said. "You don't want to be a defensive coordinator in 6-man. You want to score. You want to put up as many points as you can. It's basketball on grass, that's basically what it is. And right now, we want to be Golden State."
