STONEBURG, TX (KAUZ) - Our Training Camp Road Trip enters our final 6-man district, 12-1A Division I. We start with the Gold-Burg Bears, one of three teams in the district with new head coaches.
The new head-man in Stoneburg is a familiar face to Texoma sports fans, and says he's excited to be there: Gordon Williams.
He moves to Gold-Burg after 15 years at Petrolia, where he was basketball coach and athletic director. He initially came to Gold-Burg for that same position, but head football coach has since been added to the mix.
"[I'm] excited about whatever they want me to do," Williams said. "I enjoy working with kids, and I love all the sports equally. So whatever we're doing, I'm game."
He hasn't directly coached football in a long time, but things won't be completely new for him.
"Well I've been associated with football all along," he said of his time in Petrolia. "I'm out helping, but as far as actually coaching, it's been about 10 years."
He said the time he spent at the Texas Six-Man Coaches' Association clinic in Wichita Falls this summer was very helpful.
"Everybody in the 6-man game, they're so willing to help," he said. "And they understand. They see this type of thing all the time, so it's been great and they've been really helpful."
Two days into practice, he likes what he sees so far from his kids, and knows that they'll be teaching him almost as much as he's teaching them.
"They're going to be helping me, you know they understand that I'm learning," he said. "The kids are excited. I'm surprised by how excited they are, and ready to go."
He said they only have eight players out right now, but the good news is, five starters are back from last year's team and three are only juniors.
"Blake Allen will be our quarterback," Williams said. "And then Will Hamilton and Coplin Miller, a couple of kids that were on the varsity last year, and they've been helpful as far as giving me an idea what they did last year and who plays where."
Coach Williams says he knows Bryson and Newcastle will be favored to take the two playoff spots in the district, though he's not conceding them. His goals in 2017 are pretty simple: "To be competitive. I hope the kids come out and compete every time that we play. And understand that, I'm not sure, I don't know, we might not win every game. But just compete and be happy. Enjoy what you're doing."
The Bears will open their season Friday, September 1st at the Benjamin Mustangs.
Tuesday night on Newschannel 6 at 10, we'll hear from another Montague county team, the Saint Jo Panthers!
