WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - The Wichita Falls Police Department will be getting new equipment, something Police Chief, Manuel Borrego, hopes keeps his officers safe.
On Tuesday, councilors passed resolutions for the department to apply for grants to purchase a new robot, 51 rifle resistant vests, and stop sticks.
Texas Governor, Greg Abbott, created a state grant last year for more rifle resistant vests after five Dallas police officers were shot and killed.
Funds for a grant from the Firehouse Subs Foundation would go towards a new robot.
"It allows our officers to be safe when they are engaging in a very dangerous situation because we don't retreat," Chief Borrego said. "We have to go forward because that's the oath we took to protect the citizens in our community."
Chief Borrego said the rifle resistant vests will be for the Special Operations Unit and used in active shooter situations. The robot will be used to check the scene for police officers and firefighters before they enter dangerous situations.
Chief Borrego said stop sticks are similar to spike strips, but safer because they are easier to deploy.
