MUNDAY, TX (KAUZ) - Our Training Camp Road Trip continues with Texoma's most successful 11-man team a year ago, the Munday Moguls. They will have to make some changes this year after their quarterback moved out of town, but they're still aiming high.
"You're excited every time you get to get back out here on the grass and put pads on," said head coach Patrick Corcoran. "You know the kids love playing football, so it's exciting and we look forward to another good year."
The Moguls come into 2017 with high expectations and plenty of experience returning to the team from last season.
"It feels pretty good," says senior quarterback Omar Nunez. "I think we can do something special this year."
"With anything you do, the more you do it the better you get at it," said coach Corcoran. "So getting to play 14 games last year, with who we have coming back, it will be a big advantage for them."
One major change this season will be at quarterback. Nunez played center last season, but this year he has switched to the backfield -- a position change you don't see happen very often.
"Its a big change," he said. "But I'm adjusting to it."
"He did a good job this summer working on his ability to throw," Corcoran said. "That's the biggest improvement I've seen since he started playing the position in May. He obviously put some time in. He's throwing some really good balls, so the big thing is early on in the season is for him just to manage the game a little bit and not try to do too much."
On the defensive side, Munday will rely on a strong front seven and speed to get to their opponents.
"The expectations are pretty high," said senior safety Dane Leija. "We did a pretty good job last year of holding people to, you know, not many points. I feel like we can do it again this year."
"Our defensive front has got to get pressure to the quarterback," Corcoran said. "We are breaking in two new linebackers, a new corner and a new safety, so the defensive line is pretty much back intact from last year."
The Moguls will be in the mix for another district title this year, and another playoff run.
"We want to get further than what we did last year for sure," said Nunez. "And it's going to take some big things to get there."
"Win or lose, it's about getting better and understanding what we can and can't do," Corcoran said. "And then, in district play, put ourselves in position to be a playoff participant, and then fight for a district championship at the back of it and hope that opportunity is there for us. When you get in the playoffs, you take it game by game, and it's survival of the fittest at that point."
The Moguls open their season September 1st on the road at a very good Hawley team.
On Wednesday, we'll start our look at District 5-2A Div. I, with the Olney Cubs!
