What will the eclipse sound like? Scientists want your help finding out

FOX19 -

How will Monday's solar eclipse impact animals and insects across the country?

Scientists want to find out-- and you can help.

Purdue University researchers are asking for "citizen scientists" to record wildlife during the event.

They're working to determine how the total solar eclipse will affect animal vocalizations and habits.

"This is really an opportunity to study a rare event, and it allows us to study triggers to animal behaviors," said Bryan Pijanowski, professor and director of Purdue's Discovery Park Center for Global Soundscapes. "Are some of the crickets that sing at night going to start singing during the middle of the day? Is the cardinal that is normally singing during the day going to stop singing?"

Researchers are hoping to collect hundreds or thousands of audio files from citizen scientists across the country.

You need to download the Record the Earth app, which you can use to record and log notes about your location, what was heard and other relevant information.

You're asked to record at the height of the eclipse, as well as before and after the event.
