SAFB hoping to begin main gate project

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Sheppard Air Force Base is looking to upgrade their main gate, and they could be getting help from Wichita Falls city council.

Right now construction is going on for the bus transfer project that will be completed in the coming months. However, it may not be the only project that is coming to the base's main gate.

On Tuesday city councilors will consider passing a resolution to apply for a Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant for the purpose of assisting Sheppard Air Force Base to further protect both the military's mission and value.

The grant, which would be anywhere from close to $1 million to $5 million, would help fund improvements to the main gate that would help with its beautification and address security issues that were a top priority for the base and city. It would also help alleviate some of the traffic congestion that happens on a daily basis coming in and out of the gate.

The D.E.A.A.G. grant is an infrastructure program set up to assist defense communities with critical projects that increase the military value of an installation or help grow the installation with new missions
