Local teachers recognized for excellence

WICHITA FALLS, TX -

It was a big night Thursday for 20 teachers in the Wichita Falls Independent School District are being recognized at a banquet for being the best in their field.

The West foundation recognizes teachers in WFISD that show a positive attitude, classroom enthusiasm and dedication to their teaching.

Fourth grade teacher, Megan Scroggins has grown up in WFISD.

Her mom is a retired principal.

Last month, she found out she was picked for a West foundation award.

"My door swung open and one of my kids screams 'Congratulations Mrs. Scroggins'" said Scroggins.  "Then here comes a herd of people.  I had no clue what was going on and he didn't even make it half way through the door and I was just emotional.   I Almost lost it.  I was very excited and very honored."

The West foundation started in 1983 to honor hard working teachers that go above and beyond in the classroom.

Cheri West teaches Math and Science and is also a winner.

She has taught at the district for three years and has heard about people winning, but never thought she would be one of them.

"When they walked into my classroom to give me this award I was totally blown away," said West.

Each teacher got a check of up to $5,000 to help with his or her classroom.

Both teachers said they are honored to be included in a group of such great educators.

"I don't even have words," said West.  "I'm still so in awe at receiving it.  I don't know if I even have words to explain or describe my feelings right now."

"It's a huge deal for me to be honored in my teaching," said Scroggins.  "(This is what) I knew I was going to do from day one."

About $100,000 were awarded to teachers this year through the west foundation.

Every teacher that won was nominated by their principals.

Congratulations to all of those teachers.
