Heroes of Texoma: Disabled American Veterans

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

This week's Hero of Texoma isn"t a person, it's a group of people.

The Wichita Falls Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans' mission is to help other veterans as much as they can. The DAV provides free assistance to veterans and their families in getting benefits and services that the veterans have earned from the Department of Veterans Affairs. One of the biggest services the DAV offers is transportation to the VA hospital in Oklahoma City.

"We average about 1500-2000 veterans a year that need this medical assistance and that's the only way they can get there", said DAV Chapter 41 Commander Joel Jimenez.

The DAV is not funded by the government but instead rely on fundraising. They're also currently taking donations of wheelchairs and crutches that they can hand out to veterans. For more information or questions, you can reach the Wichita Falls DAV at (940)636-7577.
