Clerk shares story of armed robbery

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Newschannel 6 spoke with the store clerk about the frightening night two masked robbers held her at gunpoint on Thursday.

"I was complaining because I was working on Halloween and everybody was like 'aren't you scared you're going to get robbed?'" Makayela Roberts said. "I told them "no, I'm not going to get robbed.'"

When the robbers entered, Roberts said she initially thought they were wearing masks for Halloween. She said it was not until she saw the guns when she noticed what is happening.

Roberts, 18, was the only person inside the Dollar Saver on the 900 block of Kemp. That is something Roberts said she was relieved about.

"I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I saw someone gets shot and I couldn't do anything about it."

She locked the door behind the men so no one else could enter. She said she tried to remain as calm as she could and used humor to try to diffuse the situation.

"I didn't think they were going to do anything to me," Roberts said. "They were just as scared of the next person robbing a store."

Officers arrived on the scene a few minutes after the criminals left.

Roberts waited a little while before she broke the news to her mom.

"I was thinking somebody stole a coke or beer or something from the store," Frances Sims-Roberts said. "When I found out what happened 'I was like 'what?' I freaked out."

Sims-Robert was happy nothing else happened to her daughter that night.

"There is a part of my heart where I want to tell those kids 'thank you' for not hurting her," Sims-Roberts said. "But I am mad at them for doing what they did."

One of the three suspects officers arrested, Thursday morning, for aggravated assault is actually a friend of Roberts.

"I had him in almost every single class," Roberts said. "We talked every day he talked to me about his problems."

Roberts said she listened to her mom's advice and quit her job. She said now the two are closer because of what happened.

"From now on I know, we're going to not miss the 'I love you thing' anymore because anything could've changed within two seconds."
