Church security top of mind following recent attack

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - Attacks on churches are becoming more common. Some have taken steps, they believe, to reduce that chance.

Wichita Falls P.D. Sgt. Charlie Eipper is the head of his church security team.

He said with more attacks happening every day, they decided it was important to protect the churchgoers physically. So they created the security team.

Sgt. Eipper believes it's worked well at his church.

"The team being used is off-duty police officers in uniform having marked cars there, showing a presence because the deterrence is just as important," he said. "So that's what's made our people feel very protected and comfortable."

But he doesn't think it's the only answer.

"Let's try to fix this internally in the human soul, the heart, the mind that we can prevent this from happening," Sgt. Eipper added.

He said the fact it's becoming more normal is a sad commentary on our society. He added all we can do is pray for the families involved and for the hearts of our nation.
