DUNCAN, OK (KAUZ) -

A Duncan woman who gave her child up for adoption 32 years ago reunited with the adopted family on Sunday.

"We wanted him to have a better life," said Kandy Lovan, biological mother. "We wanted him to be able to excel and grow."

Lovan was 13 years old when she gave birth to Ben and was unable to take care of him. He was given up for adoption.

She said she began looking for him last week for one reason.

"I found out that I had a disease that is genetic and fatal and I started looking for him," said Lovan.

Lovan reached out to an investigator on Facebook who was able to find Ben's family in just three days. She and his adopted parents rekindled over the phone for the first time last week.

"I think we spent about 20 minutes crying and we didn't even talk," said Lovan.

She said Ben's adopted parents kept tabs on her and planned to reintroduce them once he turned 18 years old, unfortunately, they never got the chance. Ben died of a brain tumor when he was 5 years old.

Ben's aunt Sharon Bearden represented his adopted parents today at Ben's birthday celebration. She described Ben as sweet, fun and intelligent, similar to Lovan in many ways.

She said Ben was the greatest gift to their family, even while he was sick.

"We all thought we were taking care of him, but we found out he really was taking care of us," said Bearden.

Which is what Lovan said she hopes he will continue to do for his siblings and her family in spirit. She sent a message of hope to other young girls who may find themselves in a similar situation like hers.

"I promise there is someone that will love your child," said Lovan. "And there are people that can help you with that.

Lovan met Ben's adopted mother Sunday night in Fairfax, OK and hopes to continue developing a relationship.
