WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Wichita Falls has a new District 5 City Councilor. Tuesday morning Metish Desai was sworn into the position previously held by Romeo Montez III.

"District 5 is under-represented," Councilor Desai said. "So I want to make sure I am a voice for the people that live in District 5."

Councilor Desai is the General Manager of the Fairfield Inn. & Suites in Wichita Falls and is thrilled to be on city council. So are his family and people from his district. They weren't about to miss him being sworn in.

"They were here at 8 a.m. asking when it was going to start," he said. "I told them 8:30 a.m. I'm so glad they were able to come out and support me."

There are many reasons why he ran. Councilor Desai wants to continue to work with Sheppard Air Force Base.

"I want to make sure we have a presence there," he said. "That I am visible there, and that we have a good relationship with the Commanders."

He wants to be a part of the ongoing downtown revitalization efforts.

"It's very exciting to see more people down there," Councilor Desai said. "More places to eat, more apartments. There's been a lot of steps taken place the last ten years, but it seems like we're turning it up a notch."

And help bring more jobs to the Falls by listening to what businesses needs are, and what the city can do.

"Speaking to businesses, finding out what obstacles they're running into," he said. "Is it the labor market? Is it big buildings they need? Are there any regulations we could help them expedite?"

But his biggest priority is being a voice for the citizens of his district and said he wants to always hear from them so they are represented.

Councilor Desai said a booming downtown can lead to citywide success. That's one reason why the native Wichitan is so passionate about those efforts. He said he likes all the planning that's been done by the downtown steering committee and their subcommittees.
