WFFD: No gas leaks in north Wichita Falls

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) -

Newschannel 6 has learned two reports of gas leaks in north Wichita Falls late Thursday morning turned out to be nothing.

Officials with the Wichita Falls Fire Department confirmed to Newschannel 6 that tank farms on Harding Street were being filled up and the vapors leaving the valves caused a strong smell of gas in the area.

WFFD said there are no gas leaks on Harding Street or City View Drive. Officials said the lack of wind did no favors for the smell which alarmed some residents in the area.

We've learned the smell did cause an evacuation of an elementary school. An email was sent to parents by interim Superintendent Dr. Brad Lewis that stated:

"In an abundance of caution, the elementary school has been evacuated to the high school gymnasium. There was a heavy gas smell in the elementary building and for safety reasons students and staff were removed from the building. Atmos has been contacted, and they are currently onsite. We cannot return to the building until they give the all clear. Those who wish, can come to the high school and sign their children out, otherwise we will return to elementary when the problem is solved."

Newschannel 6 has left a voicemail with Dr. Lewis for more information and are waiting to hear back.
