WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - The BBB helped make sure people kept their identity safe Saturday by holding "Secure Your ID" day.
Partnering with Paper Pig Shredding, the BBB invited people that had documents with sensitive information on them to come by their location on Kemp Boulevard and have them shredded for free.
Despite the wet weather, President of the BBB of North Central Texas Monica Horton said they stayed remarkably busy.
"We were a little apprehensive when we saw the forecast earlier this week," Horton said. "But this day may turn out to be, we may see the most customers that we have ever seen."
Horton said thieves will go to extreme measures, such as digging through trash, to find your info. So shredding bank and credit card statements, tax records, pay stubs, medical records and bills, even junk mail is important.
The BBB also offers these tips to minimize the risk of identity theft.
Carry only the cards in your wallet that you need. Never put sensitive information on the outside of an envelope. Chose a PIN number for your ATM card that is different than other sensitive information you have such as your Social Security number or your address. Give out your Social Security number only when absolutely necessary.
The BBB holds these shredding events twice a year. The next one will be in the Fall.
