WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - A new restaurant is expected to move into Wichita Falls Regional Airport after Gourmet on the Fly left in March.
On Tuesday city council is expected to award a contract to Southern Girl Catering.
City leaders were worried when Gourmet on the Fly decided to leave, but they got a handful of bids to take over the restaurant and are eager about what Southern Girl will bring.
"With the flights that they have coming in and out and Sheppard Air Force Base, I already have a clientele built up," Owner of Southern Girl Catering, Tamitha Holloway said. "I was just excited about adding something new to Wichita Falls."
Holloway is excited to expand her operation and so is Mayor Stephen Santellana.
"They have pretty good menu options, they look like they're going to be easy people to work with, and they are just extremely eager to get inside there," he said.
Southern Girl is expected to provide breakfast and lunch.
"Those varieties will be from hamburgers to fried chicken, to fried fish, barbeque ribs, Italian food, homemade pizza, and things of that nature," Holloway said.
When Gourmet on the Fly left, the city immediately started actively recruiting the space.
"You have a $30 million dollar airport. You want a nice restaurant facility," Mayor Santellana said. "We don't have a ton of flights in and out but when people come sometimes they are off that plane and are hungry."
He said with no restaurant, the airport is missing a piece of their puzzle. He thinks Southern Girl will do a great job filling it.
"If anybody's eaten that food before, they'll realize it's going to be not just a destination for people at the airport," Mayor Santellana said. "But hopefully a destination for people that want to eat lunch or dinner there."
"I'm honored to fill that piece," Holloway said. "I want to come in and provide convenience for the passenger and make things as easy as possible for the people that are traveling back and forth and through the airport."
Southern Girl will provide service to the gift shop, concessions, and restaurant.
Holloway said she would like to also do catering for things like weddings, watch parties, and happy hours.
Southern Girl is expected to move in and open up sometime in either late June or early July.
