WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) -

A Wichita Falls woman was arrested on Monday evening following a call to the WFPD about an assault.

When officers arrived at the scene in the 1300 block of Martin Luther King Blvd they could see Melissa Burnett, 35, yelling and screaming at people in the parking lot.

Burnett was detained and officers began to speak with witnesses. Those witnesses told officers they saw Burnett hit a 12-year-old girl in the head several times with a closed fist.

The victim told officers when she was getting out of her parent's vehicle Burnett came up behind her and began screaming at the victim and hitting her in the back of the head with a closed fist.

The victim said she had never met Burnett in her entire life and did not know why Burnett hit her. Burnett was arrested and booked into the Wichita Co. Jail and charged with Injury to a Child.

As of Tuesday morning, a bond had not been set.
