WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - The high school softball playoffs resume Thursday with four teams opening up Area Round play.

One of them is the City View Lady Mustangs, who fought through a wild Bi-District series by not giving up in the face of adversity.

Things did not get off to an ideal start for the Lady Mustangs Thursday night in Game 1 against Peaster.

"They got out early and they hit two bombs, obviously," said sophomore pitcher Maddie Chalenburg.

There was a chance it could have deflated City View.

"It's human nature," said head coach Charlie Stone. "You get off to a start where two of the first three batters hit a bomb, you're thinking, 'Man...'"

But instead, the Lady Mustangs kept fighting. Even after falling down 6-1 and 11-3 later in the game, they never went away, walking off with a 12-11 win that set the tone for the series.

"I just had to remember that my team is behind me and they were very supportive and they were all there for me," Chalenburg said. "And we just knew that after that we had to come back and get runs and we just had to keep going, keep pushing."

"We knew that Mackenzie [Cave] was going to get up, and that me and Maddie were obviously going to get on base," said senior outfielder Kori Hurd. "And we knew that [Cave] was going to hit a bomb, and that's what she did. And them talking to us kinda crazy and getting all hyped, that just gave us that motivation to keep on going."

In fact, in each game of the 3-game series the team that eventually won, trailed by multiple runs early in the game!

It's almost a reflection of City View's season, which started 12-2 before 3-straight losses in District 8-3A play. But they righted the ship to finish second, and are in the Area Round starting Thursday.

"Sometimes it's been a little bit of a roller coaster," coach Stone said. "I think we've matured. I think our young kids have grown up a lot throughout the year, and it showed in this series."

One of the young ones who has really had a major impact this season is Chalenburg. The sophomore has all but one inning this season and been one of the area's top pitchers, while also being a major contributor at the plate.

"You know, it's been hard this year only having one pitcher," Hurd said. "But she's really done her job and stepped up and she's young but she's done her job for our team."

"I try to stay as positive as I can, and I try not to let things affect me," Chalenburg said. "Obviously my mood is going to shift a little bit, but for the most part, I try to stay upbeat. Because I know that how I act is how the team is going to act."

"It's been great," said coach Stone. "I mean, she's handled it well, being a young one. And she's done a great job. I mean she's good now, and she's definitely going to be a great one before it's over."

The Lady Mustangs will play Clyde in a 2-out-of-3 Area series starting Thursday night in Iowa Park at 7 p.m.

The series moves to Abilene Christian University Friday night for Game 2, starting at 8 p.m. Game 3 is set for Saturday in Graford, if needed.
