WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - Windthorst I.S.D. is hard at work after a storm Wednesday night ripped off part of the high school gym roof.
Superintendent Lonnie Hise said he's never seen anything like it at Windthorst High School.
The last time he saw damage like that was when his wife taught in Holliday and their gym's roof was torn off.
Windthorst was one of the hardest hit Texoma towns, leaving lots to clean up.
"A little storm blew through," Hise said. "Nothing big. No one heard anything and we walked out and all of the sudden we saw insulation all over the ground."
Wednesday night Windthorst I.S.D. held their annual sports banquet.
Once Hise left the banquet, he saw insulation all over the ground and began to investigate.
First, he found their greenhouse almost entirely destroyed. Next, he found their gym missing part of its roof.
"It was raining inside," Hise said. "You could see the sky and the lightning because at that time it was still lightning and raining."
Hise said the gym was built in 2004 and nothing like this has ever happened to it.
While areas throughout Windthorst were also hit hard, ripping up trees and damaging some barns, none of it compared to the high school gym.
"We just thank God that the kids weren't around and nobody was hurt," Hise said. "This stuff can be fixed, but those kids safety is important."
Now the district will work to temporarily patch the gym roof and figure out what needs to be done next.
"Just like everything else that happens in Windthorst, we're gonna work together and we're gonna get it fixed," Hise said.
The gym will not be used for the rest of the year and there is no timetable yet on when it might be fixed.
Hise said Windthorst has had a couple good rain storms this year, but added he understands the risk being in North Texas and that for all the good, there will be some bad.
