WICHITA COUNTY, Tx (RNN Texoma) -

Officials with the Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District said e-cigarette use among youth in the county is on the rise.

According to local data gathered by the 2017 Youth Tobacco Survey from schools in the county, 10.1 percent of middle school students and 25.4 percent of high school students have tried an e-cigarette.

That is a 4.9 percent increase in middle school students and 16.4 increase in high school students from 2016, according to a press release.

In January, a report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine about the human health effects of e-cigarettes stated, "There is substantial evidence that e-cigarette use by youth and young adults increases their risk of ever using conventional cigarettes."
