Booker T. Washington PTA congratulate faculty and staff for academic turnaround

WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - Wednesday morning Booker T. Washington PTA members presented a banner to the school's faculty and staff as a way to say thank you for all of their hard work and congratulate them for a major academic turnaround this year.

"As a community, we wanted to let them know that the community appreciates the hard work and the effort that has been put in to help the youth and the kids at Booker T. Washington and prepare them for higher education," PTA member, Desi Hale said. "I believe it starts at the foundation of level which is elementary school."

Mark Davis, the Booker T. Washington Principal said this school year they noticed a big academic improvement when it comes to the results of this year's STAAR exam.

Last year only 50 percent of the class of 2025 passed the math portion of the exam, and this year 90 percent of the same class made the grade.

"If you talk to teachers, if you talk to students or parents, they will let you know how anxious kids are. It's a stressful time and I'm really just happy for them to see good results," Davis said. "If nothing else, we try to teach them in life if you put in all the hard work and put in that effort {and} work hard each and every day you will see results."

Results that Contina McNeely, a special education teacher at Booker T. Washington, who was once a student there said she's proud of and happy that it's not going unnoticed.

"As a teacher, it's always good to hear that someone appreciates what you do," McNeely said. "You hear it from the kids sometimes and you hear it from the parents sometimes but its great to hear from the PTA also because they are a parent-teacher organization so they are here to support us."

When it comes to the reading section of the STAAR exam, Davis said about 80 percent of their students showed progress this year.

He adds he's always looking for ways to improve and hopes one year they will reach 100 percent.

Parents or community members who want to be involved in PTA should contact the school at (940) 235-1196 to learn how.
