WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - It's official! Hockey is back in Wichita Falls!
The announcement was made at a press conference Thursday morning.
Spectra Venue Management has been looking for a new tenant since the Nighthawks and Wildcats left. Now, all that hard work has come to fruition.
A new hockey team will have their inaugural season beginning in October. The team doesn't have a name yet, in fact, that will be determined by a fan vote. The team will be part of the developmental premiere league called U.S.A. Central Hockey League.
MPEC General Manager Brian Hoffman said he's excited to have another permanent tenant inside Kay Yeager Coliseum.
"Whether it's a concert, whether it's a hockey team, whether it's a SMAC event, Kidsfest, or whatever the case may be, it's about getting in the community and let them know what's going on, and to come out and support these events," Hoffman said.
There will be 48 games total giving Hoffman 24 opportunities to get people inside the MPEC to increase their revenue and, as he put it, keep the lights on.
Hoffman said the key to whether this team succeeds will be community involvement and people showing up for the games. He said this addition is a big deal, but Spectra Venue Management has more work to do to get the MPEC full of events.
