Donation dollars double during WFA Food Bank challenge

WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - Wichita Falls Area Food Bank has a summer match grant challenge going on from now until August 31.

Thanks to an anonymous donor all donations up to $25,000 will be matched.

Kara Nickens, the CEO, said this time of year is when they need donations the most in order to restock their shelves.

"We're just coming towards the middle to end of summer when we've had to feed a lot of extra kids that usually get their free or reduced-price lunches at school," said Nickens.

Nickens said with retail and manufacturing donations down about 50-percent since 2013 their having to buy a lot more food. Which means it is costing a lot more money to operate the food bank than in the past.

"So, these dollars are more important than we've ever seen them, and hunger is continuing to increase," she said. "A quarter of the children in our 12-county service area are going to be hungry tonight."

For every dollar received the food bank can provide three meals.
