Cyclists gear up for the Hotter'N Hell Hundred

WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - The countdown to Hotter'N Hell is on and, with the race just a few weeks away, riders are getting ready in more ways than one. Before they hit the road, they are making sure they have the right gear.

Endurance House mechanic Jimmy Young said buying the right bike all depends on the distance of the race.

He said, "If you're doing the hundred-mile race, obviously you're going to be on one of the higher end race road bikes. If you're doing something as small as the 10K for beginners, any bike will work for that ride. A 10k is about 4.5 miles so it's not very long at all."

Next, is the most important item for safety – a helmet.

To test if a helmet is a good fit, try it on without buckling the traps. If the helmet does not fall off when a person looks down, it is a good fit.

Also, get items that will make cycling more comfortable. Padded bike shorts and gloves help absorb vibrations from the road. They also make riding for long periods easier.

Make sure to wear the right shoes. Shoes with carbon fiber soles create a good platform for pedaling.

Shoes with clips that connect to the bike pedal help keep a rider's feet in place.

Be sure to try out new gear as soon as possible – at least two weeks before a race – to make sure it is comfortable.
