WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) -

Overton Ray Elementary's doors have officially been opened to students and parents.

In the dedication ceremony held in honor of the school's namesake, Overton Ray,  his wife Sallie Ray spoke of her late husband's long career in education which included being a principal at Hardin Elementary when Burkburnett schools were first integrated.

She said, “He was always very interested in his students and he wanted school to be a great place for learning also he wanted it to be a fun place to be. You never expect something like this to ever happen and when it does it makes you think ‘Oh my’. What a honor this is to think that a school will be in his honor forever.”

Students and parents alike enjoyed discovered the new features the building had to offer. The school will be filled with students who previously attended Hardin and I.C. Evans Elementary schools.

Parents said they I.C. Evans had their biggest class ever last year, so they are happy to see that Overton Ray Elementary will provide more space.

Teachers are happy with the new building as well.

Fourth grade teacher Nanette Mills said, “It's a clean slate, it's a fresh start. The kids are excited so hopefully that'll transfer into being excited about education and learning new things.”

Third grade teacher Candice Kumer said, “I'm thrilled because the kids are always excited to come back to school, but this is a new experience for everyone.”

The new elementary school comes with 24 classrooms, three STEM labs, three science labs, an amphitheater, a library, and lounges. School begins next Thursday, August 16.
