WICHITA FALLS, Tx (RNN Texoma) - This month, a Wichita Falls Catholic church is observing Hispanic Heritage Month with food, music, and cultural celebrations.
Despite the rainy weather this past weekend hundreds participated in the annual Fiestas Patrias Parade.
It's an event Our Lady of Guadalupe Church has hosted for many years to help kick off Hispanic Heritage Month.
"I've never really been involved with the church but to see everybody come out and support us that means a lot," said Elizabeth Orozco during the parade on Saturday.
Now the church is getting ready for one of its biggest events of the year, Grand Jamaica.
"They have great food from enchiladas to gorditas to tacos," said a member of the Fiestas Committee, Maria Kalbfliesh.
While authentic Mexican food is something many look forward to, Kalbfliesh said community support is what helps them reach their goal.
"The funds that we raise are to help maintain the church as well as to help the community in different ways," said Kalbfliesh. "Also might be even helpful for our renovation which we hope to have soon."
Our Lady of Guadalupe has been sitting at the corner of Marconi St. and Homes Ave. since the 1940s and members would like to renovate the inside.
"Well we're going to do some painting and change pews," said Kalbfliesh. "There is going to be new flooring as well as renovation of the bathrooms."
Even though the church gets some assistance from its congregation, she said they still rely heavily on donations which come from events.
"We depend on them," said Kalbfliesh. "We do depend on both, this festivity and our Cinco de Mayo festivity and it helps tremendously."
The celebration will be from noon until midnight this Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe. If you wish to volunteer or make a donation, you can call the church office at (940 766-2735
