LAWTON, OK (TNN) - Authorities have answered some of the final details related to the early Sunday morning homicide and shootout which took place in Cache, leaving two dead and a deputy and another woman shot.
According to officials, James McDonald was the suspect who went to the home of Mary Stone, whom he had a previous relationship with before shooting, and killing, Roger Cole and shooting Stone in the face.
Police say McDonald then went back to his home near the intersection of Rock Creek and Quanah Road where he waited for police to arrive. When officers did arrive, McDonald began shooting at deputies which kicked off a three hour standoff. During the standoff, hundreds of rounds were exchanged between the suspect and officers. Officials also say McDonald threw military training explosives at the deputies during the standoff.
One officer was shot in the shoulder during the gunfire.
The home McDonald was hiding in eventually caught fire before he left the home and got into his vehicle. That is when snipers with the Comanche County Sheriff’s Department and Cache Police Department shot and killed him.
Mary Stone is in good condition according to a hospital in Oklahoma City. Stone remains in the hospital.
Investigators are still not certain why McDonald acted the way he did but believe PTSD could have played a role.
