VERNON, TX (TNN) - A pickup truck reported on fire lead to a grim discovery after the Vernon Fire Department found a body inside Tuesday morning.

The fire was nearly extinguished when they noticed the body and called the State Fire Marshall. Two fire Marshall’s arrived on the scene to take over the investigation.

Officials say the body has been sent for an autopsy.

DPS Trooper Dan Buesing said it was a male but they have not identified him yet. Buesing adds that authorities believe the know who the man is, based on the location, but says the identification has not been confirmed.

Officials suspect the low sitting engine and the amount of pine needles and sand might have ignited the fire.
