WICHITA FALLS, TX (TNN) - Black History Month is in full swing as members of the community head to various community events. Tuesday night a man that goes by Mr. Enthusiasm is speaking at the Martin Luther King Center.
On the second week of black history, month community leaders in Wichita Falls welcomed a motivational speaker, a native of the Wichita Falls Eastside Robert E Criner. This workshop is just one of a series of events this group has scheduled this Black History Month.
“People within the community came together sat down and just developed a planning committee to highlight all the event going on in the community the vision was to put that in a format in a calendar so that information could get out,” said Hale.
The calendar has about 12 events including art, music and family events It is also the time residents have had a complete list of event detailed on a calendar. JW Harris, who runs the East Branch YMCA says he hopes this list of event sparks changes within the community.
“We are hoping that through his motivational speaking and talk he will motivate us to start our own business and join the NAACP,” said Hale.
The committee feels this is just a start and they have big plans. Much more than just a calendar, or single event or a month.
"It is not just black history month its American history. “The importance is to not forget our heritage our struggles we do not forget our ancestry the value and importance on the role they have played in building this country,” said Hale.
Hale says recognizing black history is important to have a successful future.
