WICHITA COUNTY, TX (TNN) - Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials have released the name of the inmate that was found unresponsive in his cell on Thursday, March 7, 2019.

The deceased inmate has been identified as Joseph Oguntodu, 35. On the date of the incident around 6:30 p.m. staff was conducting security checks and saw Oguntodu laying on his bunk, unresponsive.

He appeared to have injuries consistent with a physical altercation. Staff removed the Oguntodu’s cellmate, that was identified as Christopher De La Garza, 31.

Oguntodu was taken to the medical unit where life-saving measures were taken until EMS arrived and determined to “cease life-saving measures,” according to officials.

A Justice of the Peace pronounced Oguntodu dead at 7:07 p.m. Officials released his name to us only after the family was notified. The independent Office of Inspector General is leading an investigation.

We have reached out to the OIG for updates on the investigation. An autopsy will be performed and De La Garza could face charges related to this incident. On Tuesday, March 19, the prison remained on lockdown.
