Report provides new information about death of Allred Unit inmate

WICHITA COUNTY, TX (TNN) - A death report is providing some new information about an inmate’s death in Wichita Co.

Joseph Oye Oguntodu, 35, was found unresponsive at the James V Allred Unit in Iowa Park on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Around 6:30 p.m. staff was conducting security checks and saw Oguntodu laying on his bunk, unresponsive.

He appeared to have injuries consistent with a physical altercation, according to TDCJ officials. Staff removed Oguntodu’s cellmate, that was identified as Christopher De La Garza, 31.

The following information was obtained through the Texas Justice Initiative.

According to the custodial death report, Oguntodu’s death was caused by ‘other detainees’ and the means of death is listed as ‘hanging, strangulation’ in the report. The autopsy results are pending.

Oguntodu began his 10-year sentence for Indecency with a Child Younger than 17 Years of Age in August 2011. He was set to be released in September 2020.
