WICHITA FALLS, TX (TNN) - The Windthorst trojans baseball team is in the playoffs for the 10th time in ten years.
This year, they come in as undefeated district champs and they say it’s the pitching and defense that has led them.
“It’s team chemistry out here," Windthorst senior catcher Sam McQuerry said. "Focusing on defense, our pitching that we have to do every single day for those guys, just staying focused is the key.”
“We worked everybody in the first two tournaments,” Windthorst senior pitcher/shortstop Colton Bates said. “Getting everybody’s routines down has helped us a lot.”
The Trojans only allowed six runs during their 12-game district slate and they say their defensive proficiency, that led them to a 19-2 record since March 1st, gives them confidence at the plate.
“Doing our job in the field really gives us confidence to do good things at the plate and put the ball in play and get runs across," Windthorst sophomore left fielder Kyle Wolf said.
“Even us out there at defense,"McQuerry said. "We can stop anybody really and we find a way to get runs eventually and we find a way to win the ballgame.”
On top of a great district finish, the Trojans faced several strong opponents in the non-district.
Like facing 4A Benbrook and taking on Graham in a playoff warmup game.
And it's those tough teams that have helped Windthorst prepare for their playoff run.
“We get to see a lot better pitching than in our district and it’s a lot tighter ball game so it gets us mentally prepared for a tighter game," Bates said.
“We saw their number one the other day and we scored three runs off him," Trojans senior McQueery said. "We know we’re capable of good things on offense and defense and it prepares us playing good competition that we are going to see down in round rock, we hope.”
Windthorst starts their playoff run Wednesday at 5 p.m. versus Poolville in Bowie.
