WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) -A bicyclist died on Thursday after being struck by a truck while riding on Southwest Parkway. WFPD is pushing for bike safety amongst the community so this won’t happen again.

The city is filled with bikers, so it is important for both drivers and those out riding to be aware at all times. While sometimes you hear people saying cyclists should be on the sidewalk, bikers do have a right to the road.

While some areas of town have marked bike lanes, that’s not always the case, so drivers should be sure to share the road.

“Be courteous, go around them, take your time,” Sgt. Charlie Eipper, Public Information Officer for WFPD said. “The big thing is to check corners and keep your head on a swivel, because it can be very dangerous when we have a higher number of bicyclists out there.”

On the other hand, Eipper says bikers should take an extra second to look around before turning or crossing an intersection, because no matter who has the right of way, the biker is who will end up hurt or killed if a car doesn’t see them.

Sgt. Eipper says we will start to see more and more bikers going into the summer, so it’s a collective effort to keep everyone safe while on the roads.
