Short Film About W.F. Wins 1st Runner Up

Wichita Falls is getting a lot of attention across the state thanks to a short film contest through Texas Monthly Magazine.

A group of native Wichitans produced the film about the Falls, which ended up a finalist.

As Newschannel 6 Lindsey Rogers found out, they hope this will be an opportunity to show other Texans everything we have to offer.

The theme is 'Where I'm From," the film, 'Postcards From Wichita Falls.'

"You know when you're young you want to get out of the place where you grew up and once you grow up and you go back you see the good and you see what it's really like," film producer Daniel Holoubek said.

Holoubek was raised in the Falls but moved to Albuquerque about 17 years ago.

While visiting friends and family this past Memorial day, Holoubek's friend Cathy Miles suggested entering in the Texas Monthly short film contest.

He agreed, and they decided to ask Daniel's animated brother-in-law Alan Wachsman to be the host.

"I've lived here all my life and I've watched it turn from a small town into a big city with a lot of good people," Wachsman said.

"He was a good choice and think he brought a unique side to it and did a good job," Holoubek said.

The film is only five minutes, but it showcases some of Wichita Falls most well-known features.

"People in Wichita Falls just don't appreciate what a great town we have and that performer did such a wonderful job talking about the things that make Wichita Falls unique, we just all need to remember that," Hotter 'N Hell chairman Roby Christie said.

From the history behind the Wee-Chee-Tah sculpture and the world's smallest skyscraper, to red draw paradise, also known as the Bar-L drive in.

Who could forget the event that brings in tens of thousands of cyclists each year?

"He gave a really good rendition and histories and probably taught a lot of Wichitans things they didn't know about their own community," Christie said.

Holoubek finished producing the film the day after they shot it.  A few weeks later they found out it was a finalist.

"We were excited, we were surprised, we were kind of shocked," Wachsman said.

The group was invited to a showing and awards ceremony down in Austin.

Little did they know they'd be brining home the award for first runner up.

"I was surprised and everybody else was too. It was a fun time to see it up on the big screen," Holoubek said.

Hotter 'N Hell Hundred Chairman Roby Christie said it is a film and recognition all Wichitans should be proud of.

"It reminded me of the new slogan in Wichita Falls the city of blue skies and golden opportunities. All we volunteers with HHH and the sculpture, couldn't help but be proud of that," Christie said.

The short film finalists will be featured in the September issue of Texas Monthly Magazine.

You can vote for 'Postcards from Wichita Falls' as your favorite on the people's choice awards and recommend videos on Facebook.

Voting for that ends August 18th.
