Ex-Dictator Returns To Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Some Haitians are in shock and some are enthusiastic about the return of their once feared and reviled ex-dictator, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.

Duvalier arrived unexpectedly at Port-au-Prince's airport Sunday, along with his longtime female companion, who told reporters they had planned to stay in the country for three days.

Duvalier hasn't said why he's in Haiti, at a time when many people still haven't recovered from last year's devastating earthquake and cholera outbreak, and a November presidential election that still hasn't been resolved. He says he'll be holding a news conference later today.

Duvalier has been living in exile in France after being overthrown in 1986. The strongman and his late father had ruled Haiti with terror and repression.
