WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - If you have a dog and want to take them with you everywhere, that is now possible at Frank and Joe's on the patio just off Kemp.
This came after Wichita Falls council members passed an ordinance allowing dogs on their patio with a leash no longer than six feet and must be non-retractable.
While the patio is currently the only one open to dogs, other businesses are expected to apply for permits with similar areas for canines.
But there are certain requirements your dog needs to meet if it will be joining you.
"A dog that comes onto the patio will have to have both the city license for which city the owner resides and will have to have a current rabies tag," Lou Kreidler, Director of Health, said.
The ordinance is based on Houston's variance permit.
Kreidler said it is very successful in that community.
"It has been successful in other cities," Kreidler said. "In Houston less than one percent of their complaints in a year had come from animals on patios."
Kreidler wants people to use their best judgment when deciding whether or not to bring in their dogs.
If someone suffers a scratch or bite, animal control will be contacted and the dog will be quarantined for ten days.
Council member, Tom Quintero, voted no on the ordinance because he said the language in the ordinance was not strong enough to allow property owners the rights to refuse animals they were uncomfortable with.
