Popular dating site accused of misleading members

WICHITA FALLS, TX (KAUZ) - There is a saying that you cannot put a price tag on love.

But according to the North Central Texas Better Business Bureau, that probably does not apply to many.

The B.B.B. has received complaints about match.com and their auto-billing services, stemming from what they think is just a one time fee.

"The disclosure that they are going to auto bill and set up a reoccurring charge is buried really deep down, three or four pages deep in the box that you are checking to agree," Monica Horton, President of the Wichita Falls B.B.B. said.

It is part of the reason the dating website has an F rating from the B.B.B. and has the second most unanswered complaints out of 50 million businesses.

Horton said it is not the only gripe.

"We have also received a few complaints about fake profiles," Horton said. "When you are on those online dating sites, there's a fake profile. And somebody reaches out to you and starts contacting you and it can lead to a catfishing scam."

It is affecting people in the Falls.

"We have talked to victims here in Wichita Falls who have lost as much as $200,000 dollars to a catfishing scam," Horton said.

But Horton has advice for you, so the only thing you fall for is someone else.

"Make sure you read the terms and conditions before you plug in your credit card information and approve that transaction," Horton said. "We encourage consumers to log on and see what is being said about any of the dating sites."

Horton said that consumers also need to be aware that the owners of match.com own several of the other dating sites.

She said that match.com has had an F rating for quite some time, due to unanswered and unresolved complaints.

She added that they have been responding to some of the complaints, but there is no evidence they have addressed the pattern of those complaints.
