WILBARGER COUNTY, TX (KAUZ) - UPDATE: DPS officials said Dr. Jay William Baxley, 56,  or Vernon was the pilot and only victim in a plane crash just west of Wilbarger County's airport north of Vernon.

Baxley's jet was similar to a T-38 trainer. The FAA is investigating the crash.

According to DPS troopers, one man is dead following a plane crash near the Wilbarger County Airport.

Wilbarger County Sheriff Bill Price said a call came in just before 1 p.m. on Sunday about a plane that went down just west of the airport.

The pilot was the only one in the plane and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There is no word on what caused the crash, but the FAA will investigate the incident.

Sheriff Price said GIFT, a female-friendly flight school, was having an event at the airport at the time.

Ashley Benton, a GIFT member, said she was coming back from lunch when she witnessed the crash.

"We saw him do a low pass on the runway," Benton said. "He had gained a little bit of altitude and made a left turn and eventually rolled into the terrain and we saw it blow up with smoke."

Benton said several others with the GIFT program also saw the accident take place.

DPS, Wilbarger County Sheriff's Office, Vernon VFD, and the Wilbarger County EOC responded to the scene.

Sheriff Price says witnesses are being interviewed to learn more about the cause of the crash.
