Texas Education Commissioner calls for student cell phone ban in schools

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - Mike Morath, the Texas Education Commissioner, recommended lawmakers ban student use of cell phones in Texas schools.

Morath called for the ban in a Senate Education Committee hearing, where he called the use of cell phones “extremely harmful” to student progress.

Lawmakers will have to weigh the distractions and potential mental health issues brought about by student cell phone use against the benefits the phones provide in emergency situations.
