WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - Children’s car seats are a crucial element of vehicle safety, and TXDoT and Texas A&M joined forces tonight to teach the community how to properly install them.

The most common mistake when it comes to car seat installations and adjustments, according to course instructor Tish Beaver, is a loose harness.

“The most common error we see is a loose harness, so if that child is not secure in that harness they can either be ejected or can really jostle around during crash dynamics,” Beaver said.

A student and registered nurse named Megan Litteken who just finished the 3-day course explained how the program had enhanced her skills in her daily career, as she is now a certified car seat installer.

“We have nine or ten from the Women and Children’s Division at United Regional here that touch every single baby in a car seat before they go home with their parents,” Litteken said. “So expanding that knowledge and enhancing those skills to know that those babies are going to be in those car seats the best way and the safest way means a lot!”
