Midwestern State vs. West Texas A&M: Women’s Soccer
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Midwestern State women’s soccer team saw its Lone Star Conference postseason tournament run come to an end in heartbreak, falling to West Texas A&M in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 tie through double overtime in the quarterfinal round.
After a scoreless opening half, West Texas A&M broke through in the 55th minute when Sienna Hurrell put the Lady Buffs on the board. The higher-seeded Mustangs were seeking revenge after dropping a matchup to WT earlier in the season.
Midwestern State responded in the 74th minute off a corner kick from Lexi Gonzales. During a scrum inside the box, Sophie Ferro got a piece of the ball before Tarryn Sueltz finished it off into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1, igniting the home crowd and the MSU football players in attendance.
Both teams pressed for a winner late in regulation. West Texas A&M got a quality look off a long pass, but MSU goalkeeper Lauren Short made the initial block before the second-chance attempt rolled just wide of the net to preserve the tie.
After remaining deadlocked through two scoreless overtime periods, the match went to penalty kicks, where the Lady Buffs prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to advance.
