WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Texas Department of Transportation released a list of tips and information for drivers pulling a trailer. Trailers, if not handled properly, can pose dangers to other drivers. TXDoT recommended the following:

  • Double check your vehicle’s tow rating and the weight of the load you’re towing.
  • Make sure you’re using the correct size of hitch ball.
  • Ensure tire pressure on both vehicle and trailer are up to standard.
  • Get help lining up your trailer and vehicle when connecting the trailer.
  • Make sure the ball mount is at the proper level for the trailer to ride parallel to the ground.
  • Check if the hitch is safely secured before beginning towing.
  • Use trailer chains every time.
  • Check brake lights, running lights and turn signals before departure.
  • Make sure all cargo is secured and the trailer is balanced.
  • Give yourself extra stopping distance.
  • Drive a little slower and stay alert.
  • If the trailer starts to sway, gradually decrease sped until it stops.
  • Exercise caution on lane changes and turns.
