WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Texas Department of Transportation released a list of tips and information for drivers pulling a trailer. Trailers, if not handled properly, can pose dangers to other drivers. TXDoT recommended the following:
- Double check your vehicle’s tow rating and the weight of the load you’re towing.
- Make sure you’re using the correct size of hitch ball.
- Ensure tire pressure on both vehicle and trailer are up to standard.
- Get help lining up your trailer and vehicle when connecting the trailer.
- Make sure the ball mount is at the proper level for the trailer to ride parallel to the ground.
- Check if the hitch is safely secured before beginning towing.
- Use trailer chains every time.
- Check brake lights, running lights and turn signals before departure.
- Make sure all cargo is secured and the trailer is balanced.
- Give yourself extra stopping distance.
- Drive a little slower and stay alert.
- If the trailer starts to sway, gradually decrease sped until it stops.
- Exercise caution on lane changes and turns.
