WFISD releases phone ban policy for 2025-2026 school year

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Wichita Falls Independent School District released details of how the statewide school phone ban will be implemented in the upcoming school year.
The district said the new rules are in place, “To provide a focused, respectful, safe, and distraction-free learning environment, WFISD, in alignment with Texas House Bill 1481.”
Texas House Bill 1481, also known commonly as the phone ban bill, put into motion a series of meetings in public school districts across the Lone Star State, including WFISD. This culminated into a release from the district’s Facebook page around 7 p.m. on Monday.
The release said, “Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, this new state law prohibits students from using personal communication devices during the instructional day while on school grounds."
Devices prohibited include cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, earbuds, smart lenses and “any other device capable of digital or telecommunication.” According to WFISD, there are exceptions for students covered under a Section 504 plan or Individualized Education Program.
“Prior to the first day of school, we encourage you to discuss this new Texas law with your children and emphasize the importance of focusing on learning throughout the school day,” the post said.
WFISD’s website defines what a “school day” is and what will be done if a student does not comply with the policy, as well as other FAQ’s.
The consequences for the first five offensives are also on the website. The first offense requires a parent or guardian to be notified and the device must be picked up in person. More offenses garner harsher consequences, up to the 5th offense, which includes 3 days of in-school suspension.
