DPS confirms one dead after wreck on Hwy 287
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - One person is dead after a wreck on Highway 287 near Rifle Range Rd. according to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Juan Gutierrez.
Around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that its team was responding to the wreck on the westbound side of the highway. The post said both lanes on that side of the highway were shut down while first responders worked the scene.
News Channel 6 crews confirmed with Gutierrez that a car with two passengers was driving down the highway when it veered into the righthand lane, which was closed for construction.
The car hit an truck-mounted attenuator (TMA) in that closed lane. The car’s passenger was taken to the hospital and there was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash.
At the time of this report, DPS said traffic would be diverted off of the highway onto the Rifle Range Rd. for a couple hours.
