Wichita County Commissioners approve Rutledge as incoming sheriff
“That’s the only one to be picked.”
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - There’s a new sheriff in town, and he goes by the name of William Rutledge.
In early August Wichita County Sheriff David Duke announced his retirement. On Tuesday morning, county commissioners unanimously appointed his second-in-command, Deputy Chief William Rutledge, as the new sheriff with a 5-0 vote.

Rutledge has been in law enforcement since 1988 and has spent the last 16 years as a key member of the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office management team.
Rutledge said for him this opportunity means everything.
“I’m honored, I’m really, really honored by the fact that they trust me to do this. I won’t let them down moving forward. Like I said, we’re going to continue with whatever Duke has started. I see a smooth transition, and I’m just honored that I have a 5-0 vote,” Rutledge said.
Duke said Rutledge was the only person he considered to take over for the remainder of his term.
“That’s the only one to be picked. His experience in law enforcement and through the command staff of the Sheriff’s Office dealing with budgets and personnel is impeccable,” Duke said.
Wichita County Judge Jim Johnson said the court’s familiarity with Rutledge made the appointment process easier.
“He’s been the sheriff’s right-hand man for some time, so we’ve gotten to see him sort of in a semi-sheriff role for a number of years and he’s done well at least from my relationship and perspective, he’s always been quick to respond, he listens to what the court’s asking and where we’re trying to go. Just responsive and a good team player,” Johnson said.
Rutledge is expected to begin his new role next month and will serve as sheriff until the end of 2026. However, to remain in office past that point, he must run and win in the November 2026 midterm election. He has already announced his intention to run in the 2026 primary elections.
