MSU students get hands-on experience with mock emergency scenario
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - As the old saying goes, communication is key; that philosophy was put to the test Friday morning at MSU Texas, where roughly 100 students took part in the Interdisciplinary Communications Event.
Organizers shared that it shows students just how closely they will work with other professions in the event of an emergency. The program may look like a real situation you would see at the hospital, but it’s actually the Interdisciplinary Communications event held at MSU Texas.
“They are vitally important for the students. It allows them the opportunity to work together, collaborate with each other, work with each other, and figure out what’s going on with each discipline beyond just their own discipline. And really practice for a real-world experience,” MSU Texas Director of Interprofessional Education Randy Case said.
More than 100 students from Respiratory Care, Radiology, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Social Work participated this semester.
“It’s a learning curve; we never really communicated with anyone outside of our major, so that was definitely something that was new but a good experience,” said MSU Texas Nursing student Kimora Carter.
The first scenario was a bicycle accident, and the second was a dental patient having a heart attack.
“This really gives them the opportunity to learn from each other, and so, we really emphasize the communication aspect of it. Not the skill level. We’ve watched their skills in the classroom. We know how well they’re doing with that. This is all about communication,” Case said.
“It really did help me realize this is how you do things, the people who need to come in, like moving parts and working together,” MSU Texas Nursing student Jade Schufford said.
As of May 2023, almost 1.5 million people in Texas worked in health care jobs, making it the largest sector in the state. Those who are a part of MSU Texas are proud to contribute to that number.
We play a big role in our community by just being there in the community, like community service, like social workers, and then nurses can do everything. If you want to feel better or need life-saving measures, we can help, like on the side of the road, like if something happens, so just being there for our community.
