WFISD Board of Trustees holds scheduled meeting with two key topics on agenda
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The Wichita Falls ISD Board of Trustees held its scheduled meeting Tuesday, where two major topics drew significant attention: attendance zoning and high school campus progress.
The meeting drew a full crowd, largely made up of supporters concerned about proposed rezoning. Teachers and supporters of Crockett Elementary filled the room to urge the board to leave their campus out of the attendance zone changes. Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee said their strong turnout appeared to influence the board.
“And so tonight we had a member from the Crockett teaching staff that said, leave us alone, here’s why, and gave a really logical reason to that. The board listened to that and voted quickly on option B in favor of Crockett,” Lee said.
Principals from both high schools also presented updates on their campuses’ progress this year. They outlined plans aimed at improving academic performance, noting that test scores are still catching up to the current school year. They also highlighted challenges such as low student participation in tutorials.
Dr. Lee said the data on tutorial attendance was surprising and that the district is working on new strategies to address it.
“We’re finding different strategies, external motivators, but that was a good piece of data for the board to see,” he said. “We offered tutorials, but not many students are taking them up on that offer, and they need to be. It’s generally the ones that really grasp the content those are your really good students, A and B students. Those are the ones going to tutorials, not the ones that need it the most.”
Lee said the district is supporting both high school principals in the areas they identified, as well as additional areas, to ensure they reach their goals. He added that the outlook for both campuses remains positive.
